Vegan Protein Powders

There are many protein supplements beyond pea protein powder that represent a growing trend. Vegan protein powders are not specific to vegans, although vegans like them because they are non-dairy. Whether it is rice protein, hemp protein, or soy protein, vegan proteins are an alternative that bring different benefits to the table.

Soy Protein

Soy has long been a prominent alternative substitute for a variety of consumables from soy milk to soybeans themselves. Soy protein is an excellent source of protein, containing about 30mg's of protein per serving. These powerful little bean has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, prevent breast cancer, prevent prostate cancer, incease immune system defense (T-cells), reduce (bad) cholesterol and aid in natural hormone replacement therapy. Best of all for those seeking to diet, soy protein acts as a natural anti-oxidant, blocking trans fatty acids. Compared to other protein powders, soy contains about the average in terms of protein per scoop. Men may not be huge proponents due to the estrogen levels associated with soy, but it is nevertheless a well endowed alternative.

Hemp Protein

Hemp protein powder is a relatively new player to the alternative protein powder field. One of the best qualities of hemp is that it is completely naturally grown. Farmers love it because it is a weed, which means little maintenance and - most importantly for customers - NO pesticides or herbicides! Hemp protein consists of many "good" fatty acids with omega 3, 6, and 9s as well as GLA which is essential for cellular generation. It has been shown to reduce the risk of many diseases including cancers, arthritis, and various skin conditions. In terms of nutritional value, hemp is comparable to fish and flax oil. The best part of hemp protein is the high concentration of isolated protein contained in many natural protein powders. Many have even compared natural hemp protein powder to leading brands of whey protein powder in terms of effectiveness.

Rice Protein

Rice protein has long been seen as the "weaker" cousin of pea and soy protein powder. Although it is true that most rice protein powders do contain less protein per serving than other alternatives, there are rice protein powders - in particulalr brown rice protein - that do offer comparable effect with sometimes better overall quality. What it lacks in power, it makes up for in quality. As so many decisions about protein powder are made based on the protein content per serving, sometimes the quality of the protein gets lost in the shuffle. In addition to quality, one of the greatest selling points for rice protein is its relative price. It is generally much easier to produce and therefore much more affordable to the end user. It is also extremely easy to digest, making it a great alternative for those who have struggled digesting some of the other alternatives but still want to use a plant-based protein source.
